2 Views • Dec 14, 2016
Description
The on going net neutrality debate has caught the eye of all. In a nutshell this is what is the ongoing debate is all about and what Net Neutrality stands for.
You as a user pay to your internet service provider or ISP to access web on your computer or cell phone. internet service provider have a tie up with the Telecom government organisation - TRAI ( Telecom Regulatory Authority Of India). As per the current TRAI rules, you pay your internet service providers a fixed cost for a bandwidth between 1 mpbs to 10 mbps and any site that you visit will open as per the bandwidth that you have paid for. Same goes for any data uploaded or downloaded. Also you have the freedom to access any legal website, unlike china and Korea where the government has banned social media sites and messenger and photosharing apps This is known as Network Neutrality or Net Neutrality.
So what will change?
1. Even though you will pay your internet service provider a fixed cost for speeds between 1 mpbs to 10 mbps like you have been doing till now, TRAI will block certain websites that they feel should not be viewed just like China.
2. Websites will not load at the same speed. Certain sites will load faster and certain slower. So for example if there are two sites which sell online products, then one site will pay the internet service provider more amount of money so that his website will load faster and the other website will load so slow that you will get frustrated with the internet speed and go to the other website and buy online products from there.
3. All social media websites or messanger apps can now be surfed on your cell phone by buying a basic net pack. However certain social media sites or messanger apps that might be blocked or will load slow if you are using the basic pack. To access those sites or make them load faster, you will have to buy an extra pack.
TRAI has published an article of 120 pages which asks you wether you feel that they should go ahead and allow this or not.
What can you do?
Send an email to TRAI at advqos@trai.gov.in urging them to NOT allow this and maintain Net
