FDA approves OTC Birth Control

The Food and Drug Administration has approved the first over-the-counter daily birth control pill in the United States. The pill, called Opill and manufactured by Perrigo, will make oral contraceptives more accessible, particularly for teenagers and women who don't regularly visit a doctor. Health experts have advocated for nonprescription birth control pills for years, citing their long-standing safety and effectiveness. The campaign gained momentum after the Supreme Court's decision last year curtailed the fundamental right to abortion established by Roe v. Wade. Opill is expected to be available over the counter in stores starting in January or February, with no age restriction. Medical organizations, such as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Medical Association, have long supported the availability of nonprescription birth control pills, highlighting the potential public health benefits.
