Faryl Smith lands Classical Brits nods

The pop world is not the only place where talent show stars are making waves. They are being recognised in other musical circles too, the evidence of which can be seen at the Classical Brit Awards, where they secured a host of nominations

Faryl Smith, 14, who rose to fame on Britain's Got Talent in 2008, is in the running for Young British Classical Performer and the Album of the Year prize. She will be competing against former X Factor star Rhydian Roberts in that category and Only Men Aloud who won BBC series Last Choir Standing.

While some snobbery about the popularisation of classical music still exists, most agree that Faryl and co have earned their right to a place in the limelight.

"Faryl is a genuinely very talented singer, as are Only Men Aloud and Rhydian," said fellow nominee Camilla Kerslake at a launch for the Classical Brits in London's Mayfair.

"Just because they found fame that way doesn't make them any less talented," she added.

Popera star Camilla, who is signed to Gary Barlow's record label, is also up for the Album of the Year prize, alongside the Coldstream Guards and Pope Benedict, whose record Music From The Vatican has received a nod.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at London's Royal Albert Hall, hosted by Myleene Klass on May 13.
