FAA relaxes regulations on electronic devices during flight

The Federal Aviation Administration announced on Thursday (October 31) that it soon plans to allow air travelers to use their electronic devices throughout the entire duration of a flight. However, the ban on actually using cell phones to make calls will still remain in effect while in the air.

The FAA said that airlines can soon allow passengers to use portable electronic devices such as tablets, laptop computers, e-readers and cell phones in airplane mode throughout the flight. Some limitations and restrictions would depend on circumstance.

Currently, passengers in the United States are banned from using consumer electronic devices until the plane rose above 10,000 feet. Airlines who want to implement the more relaxed regulation will have to first prove their aircrafts allow passengers to safely use their devices in airplane mode, gate-to-gate.

A panel the FAA established last year to study the issue of electronic interference during flight concluded that most commercial airplanes can tolerate radio interference signals.
