Exclusive: Edgewater Fire

EDGEWATER—Officials are still trying to piece together what caused the devastating fire that destroyed the Avalon apartment complex Wednesday night.

The blaze, which is now under control but was still smoldering Thursday morning, rapidly tore through the upscale apartment complex. No serious injuries were reported. The Bergen County Arson Unit is still investigating what may have sparked the fire.

Edgewater Fire Chief Tom Jacobson said flames spread quickly throughout the building due to the "lightweight" wood construction and truss-style roof.

"If it was made out of concrete and cinder block, we wouldn't have this sort of problem," he said during a press conference Thursday morning.
