Ex-MP Chaytor pleads guilty
Description
Former Labour MP David Chaytor has pleaded guilty to three charges of fraud over his expenses.
His admission of fraudulently claiming Parliamentary expenses means he is the first politician to get a criminal conviction in connection with the scandal.
Chaytor had previously denied the charges and was expected to stand trial at Southwark Crown Court on Monday. But after unsuccessful legal challenges to stop the trial, he changed his plea to guilty.
On Wednesday the Supreme court rejected the claims for Chaytor being tried in a criminal court, since parliamentary privilege does not cover "ordinary crimes".
The former MP for Bury North held his seat since 1987, till the expenses scandal broke last year.
He will be sentenced on January 7 at Southwark Crown Court and faces a maximum of seven years jail. He is expected to receive a more lenient sentence due to his guilty plea.
