Friends and family said a final goodby to former astronaut Scott Carpenter at his funeral on Saturday in Boulder, Colorado.

Carpenter was the fourth American ever to journey into space and the second to orbit the Earth in 1962.

His friend and former colleague on the Mercury programme John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, paid tribute.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) JOHN GLENN, FORMER MERCURY ASTRONAUT, SAYING:

"Scott's curiosity about almost everything around him was not limited to space and undersea experiments, it was just a way of life with him. For instance, Scott loved music, and whoever said music is the language of the emotions must have known Scott Carpenter."

Despite his fame as an astronaut Carpenter spent considerably more time in the opposite direction on the ocean floor.

In 1965 he joined the Navy's SEALAB project, spending 30 days living and working more than 60 metres underwater.

Two years later he went back to NASA and helped
