In Paris locals and tourists cracked open bottles of bubbly on the banks of the River Seine, undeterred by relentless rain in the French capital.
The iconic Eiffel Tower lit up on the stroke of midnight to welcome in the New Year.
Many couples seized the romantic atmosphere of the occasion to share a kiss as they prepared to face what the New Year may bring.
