Elwyn Stories

For over 163 years Elwyn has been helping children and adults with intellectual disabilities lead meaningful lives. Elwynhas locations in four states, Pennsylvania, California, New Jersey and Delaware. There are many stories about how individuals with intellectual disabilities have overcome obstacles to become more engaged, empowered and enriched at Elwyn.There is the story about how Randy and Chris, two unlikely individuals have become best friends. They were born a day apart and neither one ever formed any bonds with their siblings or fellow house mates. Now they look out for each other. Or these is Bruce who struggled with the simplest form of communication is now not only talking but singing! Read the story about Stephan who when he first came to Elwyn from another facility had to be fed via a gastrostomy tube and usually kept to himself. Now Stephan is more social and able to enjoy solid foods which he can feed himself. Then there is the story about Michael who suffered from severe seizures. When Michael came to Elwynhis doctor diagnosed him with high levels of an anti-seizure drug. The side effects are drowsiness, nausea and disturbance of motor coordination. The doctor immediately cut his dosage. Now Michael is able to sit up independently, is more aware and able to do physical therapy.
