Elia Michael - Plain Writing

I must admit to liking plainer speech,
In writing too I like simplicity.
It has a kind of beauty which can reach
The heart directly, clearly, touchingly.
I try to write in plain and simple style,
Rejecting words ornate or flowery,
And words which haven't been used for a while,
Or words employed in empty flattery.
There is an art to writing plainer verse
And would that I had mastered writing so,
But though I might have failed, it would be worse
Composing vapid verse, well-dressed, all show.
But in the end, what's beauty in my eyes,
In yours, may be a thing which you despise.
