A group of tourists had a lucky escape after an angry and protective mother elephant stared them down menacingly as her herd crossed a road. The group of tourists were on a safari trip through Chobe National Park in Botswana when they stumbled across the pack of wild elephants. As they inched along the road, the tour guide brought their vehicle to a standstill as the elephants sought to cross the path. But one overly protective mother became weary of the vehicle and its occupants – menacingly staring down the tourists through the vehicles flimsy windscreen. Footage captured by Australian tourist Gerard Ahrens shows the few seconds where the tourists were in a standoff with the elephant. As the mother refuses to break eye contact, everyone in the vehicle remains quiet in an attempt to not spook her. Eventually after a few long seconds, her tiny baby emerges from behind her safely across the path, which appears to relieve some of the mother’s anxiety. And eventually she breaks eye contact and slowly moves along with the rest of the herd – much to the relief of everyone inside the safari Jeep.
