Electric Bacteria Grow Nanowires

Shewanella bacteria grow underground and in watery sediments, and when they are starved of oxygen, they shoot out tiny wires. Such nanowires, shown extending from the microbes in this video, conduct electricity to help the microbes breathe in a surprising way.
