Description

Egyptians cast their ballots in a landmark constitutional referendum - one that has also polarized the country.

The vote is seen a key step in Egypt's now two-year-old transition to democracy.

The draft charter - though - was written largely by Islamists and has drawn criticism from liberals and Egypt's Christian minority.

Among those casting their ballots early Saturday - Prime Minister Hisham Kandil.

Security around polling stations was tight.

That's in part because violent clashes marred the leadup to the first round of the referendum last week.

During that ballot, 57 percent of voters approved of the charter, according to unofficial results.

That has caused analysts to expect the constitution will be passed when the final votes are counted.
