Egypt votes on controversial constitution

Egyptians line up to cast their ballots in a landmark referendum on a new - and controversial - constitution.

The ballot is considered a key step in the country's transition to democracy, which has often been rocky.

Deadly clashes marred the lead up to the vote and security was heavy around polling stations.

The new constitution was largely written by the Islamist allies of president Mohamed Mursi, seen here voting early Saturday.

Critics say it doesn't do enough to protect the rights of women and religious minorities.

Many voters, though, think the proposed constitution will help bring stability to the country.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) VOTER SAYING, AHMED GINDY, SAYING:

"It is inevitable that people will disagree on things, but it is a good base that we can start to work."

If constitution is approved, there will be parliamentary elections next year.

If it fails, the drafting process will begin all over again.
