Egypt on Wednesday was again at a crossroads after a night of deadly protests and counter-protests.

At least 16 people are reported to have died in fighting between pro- and anti-government demonstrators.

The deadline for an ultimatum issued by the army to President Mohamed Mursi is due to expire within the coming hours.

He's been told to share power with his opponents or face a military solution by 1500GMT.

That military solution would involve pushing Mursi aside and suspending the constitution.

Mursi's vowed to stay put.

(SOUNDBITE)(Arabic) EGYPTIAN PRESIDENT MOHAMED MURSI SAYING:

"We now have a reference, we now have a legitimacy, an elected leader, a constitution voted by the people and we are working according to this legitimacy. If we respect this legitimacy it will be the only way to avoid civil strife."
