Thousands of antigovernment protesters fill Tahrir Square in Cairo.

They want to see President Mohamed Mursi step down.

As they call for change Mursi is clinging to power after he rebuffed an army ultimatum to resolve the crisis.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) ANTI-MURSI PROTESTER, MOHAMED SHAABAN, SAYING:

"Dr. Mursi can suggest things to the people here in the square. But as you can see, it's the people of the square who are doing the talking. Whatever we say, whatever the presidency says, whatever the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party says -- it is now too late. People here will not care, the people who have been here for a week without food or drink and are tired are the ones now doing the talking, and we are telling Dr. Mohamed with all due respect -- to leave."

Mursi's supporters are also out in the streets.
