On Tuesday, the conservative party captured 57 seats formerly held by Democrats in the House, exceeding the 39 needed to gain a majority, and picked up six Senate seats. Although falling short of the required 10 seats to capture control of Senate, Republicans weakened the Democrats hold on the upper legislative chamber.
The poll results came amid a growing public frustration the country's troubled economy.
Patty Culhane reports from Washington DC on how the election reflects a disillusionment with President Barack Obama.
