STORY: Panamanian police destroyed nearly 11 tonnes of drugs, including cocaine, marijuana and heroin on Friday.

The seized shipments, which is part of several batches destroyed this year, were set on fire in a garbage dump on the outskirts of the capital, Panama City.

The destroyed drugs were seized by security forces from August 25 through November 22, 2012.

According to Panamanian authorities, about 36 tonnes of drugs have been seized so far this year.

Central America and Mexico are major transit points for South American cocaine into the United States.

Mexico and four Central American countries said this month that illegal drug use globally was still rising despite a decades-long battle against organized crime.
