Dorothy (Alves) Holmes - The Understudy

At first glance, he seemed so young,
And so small...
'He's only thirteen' someone whispered.
Only thirteen and holding everyone
In the palms of his hands with anticipation.
We were entranced by his poise as he
Approached the podium..
His back was straight, his head high,
He was in total control.
He acknowledges the applause with a
Slight manly bow
He raises the baton, turns slowly to the orchestra...
He falters...but for a moment only.
Scattered muffled laughter throughout the crowd...
We are aware of his own silent laughter, his
Shoulders shaking.
Our little giant raises the baton and suddenly
There is only the music...
We are mesmerized.
Every movement captivates and enslaves our hearts.
We explode with applause when he takes his
Final bow.
'Encore! Encore! ' we chant.
He turns, and raises his baton, again.
