DOJ Battles Florida Voting Laws

A legal battle over voting rules is brewing in Florida, where Secretary of State Cord Byrd and ten local election supervisors, appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis, are opposing the Department of Justice's involvement in the case. The Department of Justice (DOJ) intervened in a lawsuit challenging Florida's "wet signature" requirement for voter registration, requiring certain individuals to sign their names with a pen physically. The lawsuit, filed in March by Vote.org, the Florida NAACP, and two other organizations, is being represented by lawyers from the Elias Law Group, a firm aligned with Democrats. Lawyers representing Byrd, DeSantis, and the supervisors asked U.S. District Judge Allen Winsor to dismiss the DOJ filing, arguing that federal law does not permit the United States to intervene as it pleases. However, Judge Winsor allowed those opposing the DOJ's filing, including the Republican National Committee, to respond to the arguments made by federal lawyers.
