Does Gender Equality = Fairness for Women?

This video is part of the global campaign entitled, “Women and Shariah: Separating Fact from Fiction” organised by the Women’s Section of the Central Media Office of Hizb ut Tahrir.

It is PART 3 of a series of 4 videos that examines whether ‘Gender Equality’ – a concept often used to condemn Islam’s social laws as oppressive towards women – has in reality delivered on its promises for women.

This video addresses the question of whether ‘Gender Equality’ secures a fair life for women while Islam treats them unjustly because it defines different roles and rights for men and women in marriage and family life. It explains how gender equality burdened women with the roles and duties of men, including for many becoming the breadwinner of their families. This had inevitable consequences upon their wellbeing, such as psychological strains as well as depriving women of the right to be financially maintained by their husbands or male relatives. In contrast, Islam’s prescription of different rights and roles for men and women is not based upon a belief in male superiority. Rather it effectively organises family life, relieves women of the financial and other duties of men, and ensures that they are always adequately provided for.
