Do past karmas affect our present life?

Q: Namaste Gurumaa. We see that hundreds of people die in Tsunami, earthquake or other natural calamities. How can we relate such death to past karma? Or are there some other reasons? Gurumaa: Well, life is very mysterious you never know. But the past karma theory definitely works otherwise how come in those unfortunate situations - someone gets saved while other die.
