Description
Which sock went on what foot
1420 Hixson Pike
Chattanooga Tennessee
Looking at a picture of my grandmothers house
As she stands on her front porch
Under a striped canvas awning
Wearing a white sun dress with matching high heels
A shadow covers half her face
Two small boys stand on the steps
Cousin Drew and my brother Bobby most likely
A cat is caught in mid air as it comes down the steps
The picture is old and small
It took a magnifying glass for me to see these things
The tree in the front yard is gone
The cat departed after living out its nine lives
My grandmother’s house is the first house I ever lived in
She died but not in the house
Layer upon layer, year after year, her house remains white
The awning has been removed
I remember sitting in her driveway
Under the hot sun, at a loss for so long
As to which sock went on what foot
She took me to see the Wizard of Oz
It was my first encounter with horror
The monkeys seemed so real and ugly
Never seeing a witch the green one freaked me out
I loved the Lion he cried, like me
After all this, we were leaving
I was in a state of horror
And my Grandmother saw that it was raining
She said the road was slick as glass
She hoped we didn’t fall and get run over as we walked home
I had no-one to thank as I got home from all this
It was a long time before anyone talked me to about God and a Savior
Fantasy is horror to those who have embraced reality
