- Deus Ex was initially planned as a modern-day shooter inspired by big-budget action movies such as Die Hard and The Last Action Hero. It was named Troubleshooter and dubbed a mission-oriented action simulation with little-to-no plot.

- The Illuminati is based off a real-world secret society founded by Adam Weishaupt in 1776. In the games, the Illuminati, which is widely believed to be the predecessor of Freemasonry, is covertly funded by banks run by the Knights Templar.

- During development, Gabe Newell visited the studio to playtest a prototype of the game and gave the team a major wake up call; the missions were lousy and the augmentation and skill system was dull. It forced Spector and co. to completely rethink their design approach.
