Denying foreigners minimum wage will only hurt local workforce, says Sim

Failing to pay foreign workers the RM1,700 minimum wage would ultimately disadvantage the local labour force, warned Human Resources Minister Steven Sim.
Winding up debates on the 13th Malaysia Plan in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Aug 21), Sim warned that keeping foreign workers’ wages low would push the entire labour market in the same direction.
He noted that since the minimum wage was introduced in January 2013, Malaysian workers in the lower wage brackets have seen their earnings rise by 60%.
