The dawning light from her window,
Caught the tears upon her pillow,
Left for the love who was not there,
Beside her dark and fanning hair.

Many a lass awoke this morn,
To meet the dawn with hearts forlorn,
Many a lass throughout the years,
Wept together oceans of tears.

Yet fall still fades, winter begins,
And earth upon her axis spins,
As heavenly spheres dance above,
And mortals ever fall in love.

Our hearts deep within us pound
And by these ribs encircled round
Are protected from fall or blow
From chance or fate or evil foe.

Yet when the wound comes from within,
The walls of a heart are too thin
To cushion those pangs that bestow
Lonely tears upon a pillow.
