It reaches us:
Clear and simple, sound of church bells on winter morn.

It reaches us:
Over farmer’s field, snow-quileted at dawn,
Above winter streams, frost-edged and gray,
Through tangled boughs, dark by dawning light.

It reaches us:
This distant calling,
And finds its way to us,
To windows not yet yellow with light,
To bedroom chambers only half awake with stirring,
To kitchens waiting for the lighter shades of gray.

And it reminds us:
That this mover of our spirit,
Has moved also through the centuries,
Through all dark impediments,
To this chamber of time and space,
To this house of consciousness.

Clear and simple:
Sound of church bells on winter morn:
It reaches us.
