Dementia: 'a global emergency, needing a global solution'

Leaders from the world’s richest countries gathered at the G8 Summit in London on Wednesday.

The hot topic at the summit was the need for a collaborative effort to tackle dementia, an illness affecting 44 million people around the globe.

There are warnings that this figure could treble to around 135 million by 2050 as life expectancy continues to rise.

The message of the summit was clear: “Dementia is a global emergency, needing a global solution.”

Health ministers from the G8 countries say they want to achieve a cure, or at least a new treatment, for dementia by 2025. The leading nations at the summit have committed to this goal.
