Deadly temple stampede in India

At least two people are killed and 12 others injured in a stampede at a temple in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state.

Devotees had gathered to celebrate the Hindu festival of Radaashtami when the commotion broke out.

It's unclear what caused people to panic and attempt to flee the temple...

Some witnesses blame a lack of organization, others blamed police inaction.

(SOUNDBITE) (Hindi) ANOTHER UNIDENTIFIED DEVOTEE, SAYING:

"There are poor arrangements by the police and administration at the temple. The police are doing nothing.. they are carelessly standing around. The body of a woman is lying here, she was crushed under the crowd."

Stampedes are relatively common at temples in India where thousands of people gather to pray during festivals.
