Deadly fire in Sydney nursing home
Description
A fire in a Sydney nursing home killed at least three residents.
Up to 60 fire-fighters were called out to the early morning blaze in a suburb of the Australian city which is being treated as suspicious.
(SOUNDBITE) NEW SOUTH WALES FIRE AND RESCUE COMMISSIONER, GREG MULLINS SAYING (English):
"The fire-fighters I spoke to said they could not see their hand in front of their face, the black smoke was down to floor level. It was extremely hot, there were flames across the ceiling. Two rooms on fire, so you could imagine what it would be like for elderly people, confused, just waking up with fire all around them in night clothes, so it was an horrific situation."
Fire-fighters believe the fire started in a bedroom.
Nearly 30 of the residents are undergoing hospital treatment for burns and smoke inhalation.
New South Wales Police Superintendent said the death toll could rise.
(SOUNDBITE) ACTING NEW SOUTH WALES POLICE SUPERINTENDENT, ROBERT REDFERN SAYING (English):
"There are still to date only three people who are deceased. That's three too many, but it is significantly less than has been reported. But clearly because of the smoke and the intensity of this fire there is a risk that that number will change and we should not speculate on what might happen in that regard."
Fire investigators and forensic teams are investigating the cause of the fire described by police as the state's worst in decades.
