Deadly cold snap will linger for another week

Hundreds of drivers are stuck on the main route between Glasgow and Edinburgh as snow continues to bring disruption to Scotland's roads.

Multiple breakdowns and traffic incidents brought "major congestion" to the M8 motorway, Traffic Scotland said. Motorists were advised to avoid it until further notice.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders police said: "We are trying to remove vehicles from the road and get people that have been stuck off it. We are also looking to put gritters and snowploughs out to clear the carriageway.

"We would ask anyone who is stuck to remain with their vehicles, as obviously we are looking to clear the road and abandoning your vehicle makes it more difficult for us to do that."

Britain suffered more snow and sub-zero temperatures again at the start of another week of bitterly cold weather.

Snow swept across southern Scotland during the day, disrupting air, rail and road travel, and was forecast to move into northern England during the evening.

The death toll during the big freeze rose to at least nine as it was revealed that 64-year-old Peter Andrews died as he tried to clear snow from outside his home in Moulton Way, Darlington, County Durham,

Humberside Police said another man, believed to have been in his 70s, was found by security guards patrolling the Thorpe Park site in Cleethorpes, north-east Lincolnshire, on Saturday.
