Deadly clashes erupt in western Libya
14 Views • Aug 29, 2012
Description
The National Transitional Council (NTC) had mediated between fighters from the city and others from nearby Jamil, but the clashes re-erupted after Zuwara fighters allegedly opened fire on their rivals.
Local officials cited vendettas between the rival groups as the cause for the fighting, but some said that lingering resentment over the alleged loyalty of some to Libya's former leader Muammar Gaddafi was also a factor.
Large amounts of weapons left over from Libya's uprising against Gaddafi have also impeded ceasefire efforts.
