In the darkness where the barn owl fly’s
Where thatch over sandstone lay
In the darkness as the village sleep
Where the bats come out to play

In the darkness comes an orange glow
Where a furnace burns so bright
In the darkness leather approned man
Where he stands out in the light

In the darkness pumping bellowed air
Where the red hot coals turn white
In the darkness as the sweat drips off
Where his muscles show so tight

In the darkness like a peel of bells
Where his hammer strikes the metal
In the darkness making shoes for horse
Where he keeps them in fine fettle

In the darkness this man works alone
Where he sees it as no barrier
In the darkness none would challenge him
Where he’s Mr Smith the Farrier
