before it is too late?
Did I say it
at our first meeting?
Did I say it
on our first date?
Did I ever tell you
in a poem
or on bended knee?
Did I ever say it
in a way
that you could see?
Did I even whisper
those words
softly in your ear?
Did I ever tell you,
and did you ever hear?

Or did I only say it
when you were gone,
no longer here;
in that empty space
that found me,
when you were
no longer near?
Or did I only really say it
when you slept
deeply in the night,
and so loving
and so gentle,
kissed all
the darkness
from your sight?
