David Taylor - Individuality

There’s One thing I refuse to do
and that’s to write the same as you.
I insist and won’t desist
from writing as an individualist.
But how can I be sure
no one wrote this verse before?
Am I really certain that,
these words I pull out from my hat,
have never seen the light of day,
in quite the same and unique way?

Is individuality true?
Can I be so different from,
you and you and you?
Or is it just that “I”
didn’t buy the same hat as you!
