David Harris - Your Day Off

You’re lying in your bed,
it’s your day off
and you are going to enjoy it
just as much as you can.
You’re up at the break of dawn
every working day.
Now it’s your day off
and in bed, you want to lie.
You lay there in your slumber,
then the bell on the telephone rings
and you cringe and wait for it to stop.
You feel like pulling it of the wall,
but you don’t
instead you answer it.
A jumbled voice at the other end
says, “Good morning.”
“Morning to you. Do you know what time it is? ”
“Sorry did I get you out of bed? ”
You take a deep breath
and then bite your tongue.
You’d like to tell this pratt
just what you think of them,
instead you simply say,
“Goodbye”
and scuttle back to bed
keeping your fingers crossed
the silly sod don’t ring again.
You know soon as you close your eyes
that someone else will call.
So much for the lie in
on your day off,
it just never seems to happen.
