David Harris - An Angelic Face

Today I saw a young woman
who had such an angelic face.
Unfortunately her body
was twisted and deformed.
A defect of birth
or a crippling disease,
I could not be sure.
What I am sure of was the smile on her face;
it was a mark of courage.
Courage to carry on
and be normal as can be.
Her friends took no notice
of her broken body,
only of her as a person,
which said a lot for them.
To them she was as normal as you and I.
There were no imperfections
that clouded their eyes.
Just friendship deep and pure.
They laughed and joked
just as friends would do.
No one cast a stare
as often people do.
I smiled when she turned my way,
my acceptance of whom she was,
a young woman
with an angelic laughing face.
