David Cameron's father dies

Prime Minister David Cameron's father has died after suffering a stroke while on holiday in France.

A Downing Street spokesman said Ian Cameron passed away shortly after the Prime Minister arrived at the hospital.

Mr Cameron had been due to face the Commons after returning from paternity leave following the birth of his daughter Florence.

Instead he took a commercial flight from London's City airport accompanied by his brother Alex and sister Clare, after an early morning phone call from his mother Mary alerted him to his father's condition.

Mr Cameron has previously described his father as a "huge hero figure".

The 77-year-old was born with both legs deformed, and endured repeated operations in an attempt to straighten them and ease his pain.

However, despite his disability, he forged a successful career as a stockbroker.
