David Bowie's fashion evolution through the years

LONDON — We all know that David Bowie was not just about music. He was about art, culture, sex and, of course, fashion.

His clothes and makeup were part of the performance and a way to express his chameleonic identities.

Keeping track of Bowie's transformations and personas is very difficult, considering his appearance has changed quickly and sometimes dramatically through not just the years, but sometimes in the span of a few months.

Through the 1970s, Bowie was Ziggy Stardust, with his bright flame orange mane that became probably his most recognizable creation, Aladdin Sane with his very well-known make-up design of the lightning bolt motif made by Pierre Laroche, and the Thin White Duke.

In the 1980s, with the release of "Ashes to Ashes" he revisited the character of Major Tom, a fictional astronaut protagonist of his 1969 song "Space Oddity."

In 1987 he went back to a style that reminded his most famous character Ziggy, while in the 1990s, in several occasions he seemed to have started appreciating a more sober look.

But of course when it comes to Bowie, changes are always behind the corner. In 1997, he is back to his attention-grabbing style.

Thanks to his bold looks and outrageous personas, which have for decades challenged societal norms and broke boundaries, he has become one of the most influential fashion icon of the last 40 years.
