Daniel P Martin - Sunset

The summer evening draws leisurely to a close,
Lovers basking in the subtle orange glow,
The residual heat from the day calms and tires them,
Entwined for eternity as their shadows grow.

The sea; like an infinite canvass before them,
A solar homage to Van Gough’s Starry Night.
Nature’s colours exposed in their basest form,
The pupils contracting in wonder at their light,

The power and the life at the galaxy’s heart,
Is bestowed its most faithful account through eyes in love,
The endless torch-lights, emanating from the sea,
And the sharp definition of the silhouetted dove.

The lovers sit solemnly, in thoughtful contemplation,
Transfixed as the sun bleeds into the surrounding sky,
Knowing that nothing could be as beautiful as this event,
Witnessing anew the death throes of the sun’s demise.

Mourning approaches and the lovers begin to stir,
Images of that unspeakable beauty, linger in their hearts,
And as the soft birdsong lulls them into blissful reverie,
The sun reborn, again lifts its head to play its part.
