Dana Koons - Together On A River

For just a moment the river held our hands,
Drew our lonely spirits close together,
The solace of the water clear and cold,
Two apart, again became as one.

Adrift we heard a peaceful, wordless song,
And too, the priceless gift of childish laughter,
Fighting vibrant bass danced on rod and reel,
Tugging at the turmoil in our hearts.

Our souls entwined among the rapids clamor,
Recalling rhythms lost to days gone by,
Reflections of sweet memories remembered,
Cast like autumn leaves into the eddy.

Birch trees rustled gently in the breeze,
Strong they warned of winter, yet soft, like whispering lovers,
We watched the slowly moving cotton candy clouds,
While waterfowl and vultures humbled us with flight.

And somewhere near a rocky island shallow,
Romantic flames sated soul and hunger,
Dreams there lie forever in the ashes,
Held within a ring of water polished stone.

Although our wake has long since disappeared,
Swept forever seaward by the flow,
A beautiful lure forever harbors in our hearts,
The desire to return….together….on a river.
