Dairedee Burris - Stepping Stones

I am standing on the corner of a busy street
throwing glances no one meets
giving hands that no one takes
stretching smiles no one makes.

I am not the only one
waiting for a ride
a million other souls and hearts
are crashing in the tide,

swept up in the angry wind
when all they wanted was a breeze,
looking for their soulmate when
all they got was teased.

I am not the only pebble
stuck deep in the sand
at the mercy of the moon
who chooses where I land.

I watch these other people all go
skipping over water
thrown by lovers making wishes
they sink, and are forgotten.

I see the motions of the lost
searching for a mate
to plant their soul in hopes that they
can fend off wings of fate,

but we are all a stepping stone
to reach the higher peak;
to take more breathes than needed,
we are human. we are weak.
