Creative thinking: taking an artistic approach to science

We cross the bridge between arts and science in this edition of Learning World, as we explore the benefits of taking a creative approach to teaching the so-called STEM subjects – science, technology engineering and mathematics. Anchor Maha Barada presents three stories on these themes.

The first takes us to Somaliland in the Horn of Africa, where we discover how one high school is inspiring excellence in its students through an emphasis on STEM, artistic values and a nurturing environment.

A prize-winning group of young international researchers and their innovative work is the focus of our second story. The scientists from various backgrounds pooled their talents with a young designer and the exchange produced some fascinating results. As well as opening their eyes to a new way of thinking about their respective disciplines, their collaboration on a tuberculosis project saw them triumph in an international science competition.

Our final story comes from Mexico where we meet groundbreaking astronomer Jose Salgado. His innovations in combining art and music with stargazing has made the cosmos a little less mysterious for audiences around the world.
