Costa Concordia captain arrives for hearing
Description
He faces charges of manslaughter, causing the accident that grounded the ship off the coast of Tuscany, and abandoning ship before more than 4000 passengers were evacuated.
He claims however that he performed one last manouevre to bring the Concordia closer to shore and thus save thousands of lives.
Defence lawyer Francesco Pepe said he was disappointed that no one believed his client - but that there was 'clear evidence' to support him.
Evidence presented earlier in the week also placed responsibility for the disaster more widely.
Along with Schettino, first officer of the vessel, eight other ship officers are also being investigated as well as executives of the operator Costa Cruises.
