August 1971, Mexico City. The Azteca Stadium is packed, the broadcast is constant, and over 100,000 fans turn each match into a proper spectacle. You can almost feel the history being made. Then you look closer, and the movie basically smirks at you: the tournament is different because only women are on the pitch. This is the Copa ’71, the first unofficial Women’s World Cup of football.

And before you ask, yes, it gets shut out. FIFA and the national football authorities reject it, and the whole thing gets pushed out of the sporting record. Years later, a documentary steps in and refuses to let that erase happen. It gives the players from that moment their due, way before the first official Women’s World Cup ever arrived.

Die erste inoffizielle Frauenfußball-WM, komplett von der FIFA und den nationalen Verbänden ausgebremst und später aus den Fußballakten gestrichen. Kein offizieller Ruhm. Nur diese zehn Jahre zu früh geborene Realität.

Der Dokumentarfilm kommt daher und macht was Seltenes. Er holt die Spielerinnen zurück ins Licht. Nicht als Fußnote, sondern als Pionierinnen, die das Spiel nicht gebeten, sondern einfach gespielt haben.
