Suspected Muslim insurgents killed six people, including a child, in a night time attack in southern Thailand, as peace talks between leaders of a Muslim rebel group and Thai officials look increasingly strained.

The attack took place on Wednesday (May 1) night when four assailants on two motorcycles pulled up at a convenience store in Pattani province located 500 meters from a military check point.

Police said the attackers sprayed the shop with bullets before going in to finish off their victims. They left a note saying "revenge for the innocent" before fleeing the scene, police in Pattani said.

Six people died including a three-year-old boy, police said.

The killings come just days after a second round of peace talks brokered by Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur between Thai officials and leaders of the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), one of the oldest rebel groups still operating in the three southern Thai provinces.
