After a very long inquiry the BEA investigators concluded that a piece of titanium lost by a Continental Airlines DC10 was the main cause of the accident : a Concorde tyre rolling on this piece of metal was destroyed, a part of the tyre violently projected under the wing caused a shock wave which provoked a kerosene leakage, an electric spark ignited a massive fire under the left wing.
This is the official hypothesis. Another hypothesis raised by the Continental lawyers says that several witnesses saw flames before the Concorde reached the titanium piece of metal position.
