Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, her eldest son, King Charles III, inherited the throne. He also became the new head of the Commonwealth — a non-hereditary role that Charles was declared successor of in 2018. The Commonwealth of Nations is made up of 56 countries from across the globe, including the Maldives, Canada and New Zealand.
