Colombia: Conflict Deescalation Viewed as Major Step Forward

The Colombian government's announcement that it would consider a series of unnamed measures to deescalate the armed conflict in response to the rebel's declaration of a unilateral 1-month ceasefire was considered a major advance for the peace process. Human rights and peace advocates expect the government will suspend airstrikes against FARC positions and strengthen efforts for a permanent solution to the conflict.
