Electrician Roy Neary and a group of stunned bystanders have an encounter of the first kind: they watch as UFOs fly across the sky. After this extraordinary event, Roy is haunted by the vision of a strange mountain, and much to the dismay of his family, becomes completely obsessed with trying to figure out what it means. Meanwhile, bizarre occurrences are taking place all across the globe. Government agents have an encounter of the second kind: they find material evidence of the existence of extraterrestrial visitors in the form of a World War II fighter plane and broken-down military ship, both having vanished decades earlier. Roy’s research on his vision leads him to an isolated site where he and the agents who’ve picked up the trail will have an encounter of the third kind: a contact.
